Pennie Jo Wiegand
1947-2026

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Pennie Jo Wiegand on July 13, 2026, at the age of 79.

Pennie was born in Vallejo, California on April 1, 1947, to Maggie and Ernest “Red” Sink. She had three older sisters, “Peggy” (Laura), “Paddie” (Tish), and “Poodie” (Colleen), and one younger sister Polly. The family moved several times until because her father was a Major in the US Army. He passed away suddenly on April 4, 1942. After that Maggie bought a house in Santa Rosa where Pennie and her sisters spent the rest of their childhood, when they weren’t on adventures with Maggie.

Maggie had friends in Central Alberta, and the family became close to the Szymanek family. That was how Pennie met and fell in love with Lawrence Wiegand. They were married on December 30, 1967. Three children followed in 1968, 1971, and 1973. She raised the children and also worked as a Teachers Aid at David Thompson Kindergarten helping (in a small part) to raise many other children. Later she worked for Parkland Community Living and Supports Society (C.L.A.S.S.) helping people with developmental disabilities. Then for Westward Goals Support Services Inc., as a support worker to an autistic boy, Darren Turner. She developed a strong friendship with the Turner Family which lasted until her passing.

Pennie was always caring and nurturing not just to her own family, but to anyone she encountered. She enjoyed being outdoors and staying active. She engaged in many volunteer activities in the community. Years organizing and directing Christmas Concerts, working at Evergreen Bingo, teaching catechism at the church, and teaching the Red Cross Babysitters Course. Anyone who knew her will have fond memories of their interactions.

She is survived by her husband, Lawrence, her three children, Anne, Ernie, and Patti, her son-in-law, Robert and her two grand-children, Booker and Rylee. She is also survived by her sisters, Laura, Colleen and Polly, and their families, and her lifelong friends; Brenda and Mary Ellen.

A casual Celebration of Life “Party” will be held at Evergreen Hall on Saturday August 15th at 1:30pm. Please join us for light refreshments and visiting. This will be followed by a private graveside service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Red Deer Hospice Society or to Parkland C.L.A.S.S.
