Obituary

Ilene Hazel Michael passed away on May 19, 2026.

Ilene was born on November 1, 1947 in Fort MacLeod, Alberta to Walter (Buster) and Eleanor Hatton. Ilene and her siblings John, Leona, and Lorna lived on a farm south of Fort MacLeod. At the farm Ilene had many fond memories of spending time with her cousins. The family relocated to East Coulee where she enjoyed exploring the coulees with her friends. Ilene graduated high school from Lacombe Composite High School. After graduating she moved to Fort MacLeod with a bus ticket, a suitcase and fifty dollars to start her career in banking. From there she transferred to Calgary where she lived with a family friend. In 1967, she met her husband Don at a movie in Calgary. They later married in Vulcan on November 8, 1969. Don and Ilene then moved to Rocky Mountain House where they welcomed their daughter Tamara in 1972. Later that year they moved to Calgary. In 1976, they welcomed their son Kevin and moved to Red Deer. Ilene began working at Eatons in 1982 where she worked for seventeen years. Following the closing of Eatons she worked at Central Alberta Flooring until her retirement. During her retirement she focused on gardening, being a dog Mom, and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a devoted sports Grandma, and she tried to attend all of her grandchildren’s games. She was a season ticket holder for the Red Deer Rebels, and later attended many Sylvan Lake Gulls games. Ilene loved to be on the go and traveled extensively with her sisters; Leona and Lorna. Don and Ilene enjoyed many trips and her last big trip was a trip to Colombia for their 50th wedding anniversary with all of the family. Ilene was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2021 and she spent five years battling the tumor. She passed away peacefully on May 19, 2026 at the Covenant Care Villa Marie home in Red Deer.

She is survived by her husband Donald Michael, her daughter Tamara (Steve) Neilly, her son Kevin (Paola) Michael, her grandchildren Michaella, Greyden, Dakota, Logan, Cayd, Aden and Asher, her brother John (Leona) Hatton, her sisters Leona Hatton and Lorna Hatton, and many nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her parents Buster and Eleanor Hatton and her in-laws Norman and Lucille Michael, Bud and Hazel Michael, and Harley and Mary Michael.

A Funeral will be on May 30, 2026 at 2pm at the Sylvan Lake Funeral Home. Graveside service to follow at West Meadows Cemetery with a luncheon immediately after at 4614 45st Sylvan Lake, Alberta.
