Obituary

Lawrence “Laurie” Milton Carritt passed away peacefully at home on the morning of March 2, 2026, at the age of 78. Laurie had serious health issues over the past few years but was so determined and resilient that his family and friends were starting to believe that he was invincible. Sadly, that was not the case. Laurie was born in Red Deer, Alberta, on November 2, 1947, as the fourth out of what was to become eleven children. After graduating from high school Laurie moved to Vancouver where he pursued his business degree and played semi-professional hockey. After spending a few years in British Columbia, he felt compelled to move to Eckville to work in the family businesses, Carritt and Sons Hardware and then the Eckville Super Service.
Laurie was always open to new business opportunities and diversified his portfolio across many different endeavors. He was a talented athlete, from playing various sports with his brothers and playing golf and hockey into his late 60’s. He loved his Eckville community and was proud to be a long-standing Legion and Kinsmen member. Additionally, he was a pilot and thoroughly enjoyed travelling.
Laurie had an excellent work ethic and was thinking about business decisions right to the very end. He was more than an employer; he considered his employees like family and enjoyed spending time with them at work and for special gatherings. We know that the loss of Laurie is not only felt by his family but throughout the communities of Eckville and Sylvan Lake.

Laurie is survived by his siblings, Lynda, Douglas (Nancy), Christine, Dee, and Glen (Debbie), and sister-in-law’s Pamela and Angel, along with brother-in-law Ron. Laurie didn’t have children and took on the role of fun and much-loved Uncle Laurie to his many nieces and nephews. Laurie also leaves behind his faithful companion Captain, along with many friends and colleagues. Laurie is now reunited with those who passed before him: his mother and father, Dorothy and Arthur, siblings, Leroy, Melvin, Lezlie, Brian, and Bradley, as well as brothers-in-laws Larry and Donald.
Laurie had a full, meaningful, and adventurous life and we are thankful that he is at peace now in heaven with his Lord and Savior. The family would like to thank Raymond for the care and companionship he provided Laurie during his last few months.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at the Eckville Community Center, 5305 52 Street, Eckville, Alberta, with a late lunch and refreshments served following. For those who are unable to attend a live stream will be available at:
