Evelyn Emma Haugan passed peacefully from this life at Michener Hill Extendicare on August 8, 2025, at the age of 93.
Evelyn was born on May 20, 1932, in Eatonia, Saskatchewan, and was raised on a farm there. As a teenager, she moved to Ontario to work as a nanny for extended family. She later attended nursing school in Calgary, where she earned her LPN and began her nursing career in Kindersley.
It was at the Kindersley Alliance Church that Evelyn met the love of her life, Miles Haugan. They were married in the fall of 1955. Together they raised six children: Randy (1956), Kevin (1959), Stanley (1960), Joell (1964), James (1969), and Maria (1973).
Over the years, Miles and Evelyn turned 27 different houses into homes, living in places such as Kindersley, Regina, Calgary, Dawson Creek, Grande Prairie, Fort St. John, Langley, Abbotsford, Kamloops, Eagle Bay, and finally Sylvan Lake, where they settled for a record 20 years at 18 Garden Court.
A two-time cancer survivor, Evelyn faced and overcame the disease first in 1960 and again in 2004.
Evelyn was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved the Lord deeply and read through the entire Bible in one year at least a dozen times. No one ever left her home without being offered something to eat.
She was a cherished member of Quilters With a Purpose at the Alliance Church in Sylvan Lake, where she formed incredible lifelong friendships. Her quilts—handmade with love—were given as special gifts for weddings, grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren. She continued quilting until arthritis made it too painful to hold a needle. Her artistry lives on in many homes and hearts.
Evelyn was predeceased by her parents; her beloved husband Miles; her sons Jamie and Stanley; and her sister Hilda.
She is lovingly remembered by:
•Her children: Randy (Connie) of Fort St. John, Kevin (Wendy) of Sylvan Lake, Joell (Michelle) of Swift Current, and Maria (David) McMann of Sylvan Lake; and her daughter-in-law Louanne of Calgary
•Her 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren
•Her siblings: Anne, Elfrieda, and Herb (Joyce)
•Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins
Special thanks to the staff at Michener Hill Extendicare and the Sylvan Lake Lodge for their care and kindness.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sylvan Lake Lodge Foundation.
A funeral service for Evelyn will be held at Alliance Community Church in Sylvan Lake at 3:00 PM on Saturday, August 30, 2025. A luncheon will follow.
