Roy Mills:

Doug was my coach and he changed my life. I tried out for the Ponderosa Pete’s Pee Wee hockey team and had little idea of anything to do with playing organized hockey. He taught us positional play and his personality taught us to be fiery and competitive. I recall him telling us we had to learn to really like each other and become like family if we wanted to win over the big city teams . The sense of family from that team change my idea of what community even meant. I sure thought the other boys knew a heck of a lot more about hockey than me so I worried about letting my exceptional teammates down but Doug went out of his way to teach us a structure and he went above and beyond to teach life skills in a direct and forthright way. I don’t know what would have become of my life if I hadn’t had time playing for Doug and that group of superstar players. I wish his family be able to feel the warmth of community and pride about how Doug influenced us all that year. I believe we played 72 games that year and I believe we practiced once for every game and that was a lot of hours that man gave us! When I thanked him at the end of the year, he said , “someday maybe you can pay it forward” and I promised I would. I coached four years in Stony Plain and I’d like to think some of Doug got paid forward to another generation of young men. Linda and I send deepest condolences to the entire family.
