Emily (Gibson) Ames
August 26, 1923- August 20, 2020
Emily passed away peacefully on August 20, 2020 at the Red Deer Regional Hospital just 6 days before her 97th birthday.
She was born to Arthur and Margaret Gibson in Rocky Mountain House, where she spent most of her life. In 1942 she married Gordon Ames and they had one son Terence Gordon who predeceased her in 2012.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law Faye Ames, her grandchildren: Darrell (Dianne), Darrin (Judy), and Darcie Phillips; great-grandchildren: Lindsey (Adrian), Landen (Jessica), Brittney, Spencer, Anthony and Darby; 5 great-great grandchildren: Dawson, Henry, Bronwyn, Addison and Tanner. She also leaves a sister-in-law Yvonne Gibson and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Gordon, son Terry and 5 brothers.
Emily was known to many as a teacher in the Rocky Mountain School Division from September 1949 to July 1980. She taught 4 years in Aurora, 2 years in Leslieville, 4 years in Condor and her final 17 years in the Rocky Jr/Sr High school, specializing in Home Economics. Several years of Summer School allowed Emily to get her teaching degree. Emily was very physically active. She loved hiking, cycling, gardening, camping and lots of Fishing- summer and winter. When she wasn’t doing those things, she was indoors playing piano, sewing, knitting, crocheting, hardanger needlepoint, and baking. She kept the grand-kid’s in clothes while they were young. She was close to 70 years of age when she joined a cycling group from Delta, B.C. She did 11 trips with this group covering Holland, U.S.A and Canada among them.
Emily continued to live in Rocky Mountain House until December of 2019 when she took up residences in the ‘Villa Marie” in Red Deer to be closer to her family.
We would like to express our thanks to the staff of Villa Marie for their constant, good care.
At Emily’s request there will be no service. If desired, memorial donations may be made to; West View Lodge 5427 52 Ave, Rocky Mountain House, AB, T4T 1S9, or Villa Maire Covenant Care, 10 Carrington Drive, Red Deer, AB, T4P 0G7.
To the family and friends of Emily Ames,
I am sending you heartfelt condolences for your loss of your dear Emily. Mrs. Ames was my high school Home Economics teacher in the early 1970's. I will never forget her patience with my very lacking abilities in this area and her sincere interest in spending time with teenagers. I recall a few times where my peers and I were not so willing or interested in the activities of the class; Emily ignored our moods and kept on with the lesson that day.
My memories of Emily Ames are all fond ones.
May all of her family and those close to her have all the support needed at this time.
