Obituary

CAROL BEATRICE KAUPPI(nee Godbersen)
September 16,1942 - May 23, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mom, grandma, and gigi. Carol was born September 16,1942 and passed away peacefully at the age of 82 on May 23, 2025 at the Red Deer Hospital surrounded by family.

Carol was born in Castor Alberta, the second child and only daughter out of four children, to Beatrice and John Godbersen. She grew up on the family farm in Halkirk Alberta, where she attended the Leader school from grades 1 through 5, and then transferred to the Halkirk school with brother Kenneth. She then graduated in 1961 from Lindsey Thurber Composite High School. During her school years Carol was a very active member in 4-H, going to shows and attending 4-H week in Olds, Alberta. After high school Carol attended nursing aid school at TECH in Calgary. From there Carol began her career at the Bashaw General Hospital.

In November of 1964, through some friends, Carol met a young man from Eckville, Stanley Kauppi. They began their long distance relationship with phone calls and seeing each other every 2 to 3 weeks. In March of 1965 they became engaged and got married on June 18, 1965 at the Stettler United Church. Stan and Carol resided at the Kauppi family farm near Eckville. Now Carol growing up a little east of Eckville was more accustomed to wide open spaces, but she soon realized the Eckville area had more trees than open spaces. She asked Stan numerous times to get rid of the trees so she could see farther than her yard, but as the years past Carol grew to love the trees and even began planting all kinds in her yard, making it the beautiful place it is today.

Carol worked part time at the Eckville hospital and was an active partner with Stan in all things farm related, while also raising a young family. Carol was an active member of the Hespero Community Club and the Leslieville Royal Purple in her earlier days. After her career as a nurse ended in 1995, she became an independent distributor for Grace Cosmetics and skin care. In 1997 she started the job of part time receptionist at the Walking Eagle Hotel in Rocky Mtn House for quite a few years. Carol also took on home care and house sitting for people which kept her very busy. Carol had a very green thumb, she could grow anything and everything. She took great pride in her gardening. The one thing she despised was weeds. One day she got her hands on some round up, needless to say that was the end of her weed problems!

In 1995 Carol became a Grandma to Braidon, with 3 more grandchildren to follow, Kayla, Noah, and Hailey . Then a Great Grandma( Gigi) to Asher in 2022. She was a very proud Grandma and loved spending time with them teaching them everything from crafting, cooking, sewing, playing piano and of course gardening and just having fun. Carol was a gifted seamstress. she also was an amazing quilter and loved sharing this with the ones who were dear to her heart. Everyone in her circle was gifted with these treasures, things like hand made quilts, baby blankets, afghans and anything else she felt was suiting.

Carol had been very interested in seeing Europe. In September of 2002 she made her dreams a reality when she set flight on a 22 day tour, visiting Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France and Austria. Carol loved history and was so excited to see all these beautiful places. Carol made an album of her adventures so she could revisit it time and time again. This was not the end of her travels though. In September 2008, she set off on a tour across Canada from Edmonton to St. Johns Newfoundland and all points between. Again, she made a story book album of all her adventures. Carol was a great journalist, she kept track of the daily weather and events every day from 1966 - to present. How great to look back and revisit days gone by.

Carol enjoyed her time visiting and catching up with friends. If you knew her at all then you also knew of her quick wit and sometimes unfiltered opinions. She may even of had a bit of sarcasm to share with you, but it was always in good humor. She kept herself busy with the Soup N' Sew ladies, the Leslieville Leisure Club and the Eckville Friendship Centre, where she played crib and floor curling.

Carol will be greatly missed by her children Lorna, Brian, and Garth (Theresa); grandchildren Braidon(Rori), Noah, Kayla(Brandon) Bowles, Hailey Hainsworth; great grandson Asher Kauppi; brother Kenneth (Donna) Godbersen; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and friends from all over. Carol was predeceased by her husband Stan, parents John and Beatrice Godbersen, brothers David and Allan Godbersen and sister-in-law Susan.

A Come and Go Celebration of Life for friends and family will be held at the Hespero Hall on Friday, June 6, 2025 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

My name is Jane (Taylor) and I grew up in Halkirk--I remember Carol well--always friendly at school and very much a "busy body" --her brother Ken was in my class--though our school saw several grades in one classroom! I read with interest her obituary and was not surprised at how much she accomplished over the years--Carol left a legacy!!

My heart is with you all ❤️

We will miss Carol so much, especially at Soup and Sew quilting group. I also really enjoyed the times she would stop for coffee at our place when she was on her way home from town. She was a very special person though she would be the last to admit it.
