It is with great sadness that the family of Douglas Henry Wahl, announce his passing, on Monday August 29, 2022, at the young age of 63. He was born in Edmonton, raised in Red Deer, but spent all of his adult life in Sylvan Lake.

Dougie was an avid hunter and fisherman, and a loyal partner and friend. He was an astute businessman successfully starting and running two oilfield companies, and enjoyed sharing his time with his family, extended family and friends. He was humble, but we all knew him for the kind-hearted soul he could be, helping people who were less fortunate.

He was a charmer to the old and young and his nephews call him “a legend”. He shared hunting and fishing trips with them (and many others) and taught them from an early age how to “shake hands like a man”. He was always full of stories of his adventures; his presence would light up a room and he drew people to him like a magnet.

The “Big Bear” as he was affectionately known, will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered in our hearts.

He is survived by his partner, Lori Mercredi and her family, his parents, Doug Sr. and Joan Wahl nee Vellner; his three sisters and their spouses: Christine Murphy and Murray Goodwin, Karen and Cam Scheelar, Cathy Wahl and Wade Donkersley. He had nieces and nephews who thought the world of him: Jared Scheelar and Joel Scheelar, Jeff(Diana) Murphy and Stuart (Sydney) Murphy, Paula (Brandon) Lohse, Randi Scheelar, Chelsea (Max) Killian and Samantha Fraser.

Dougie is gone way too soon, and we would have loved more time with him, to hug him and to see his beautiful, contagious smile, which was all too rare over this last year.

Memorial donations may be made to a mental health organization or wildlife rehabilitation of your choice as he was an animal lover and had many dogs, cats and horses who are all eagerly waiting for him across the rainbow bridge.

Cremation entrusted to Rocky Mountain Crematorium, Rocky Mountain House, Alberta.

Rocky and Sylvan Lake Funeral Homes, Your Golden Rule Funeral Homes, entrusted with the arrangements. 403-887-2151

Sincerest condolences to Lori and the Wahl family. Had many crazy years hunting the South Ram river with Doug , Darwin, Larry , Terry , kevin, Pierre.

Learned a lot from Doug about sighting guns, how to 90 the lease, skinning elk, roughneck stew and especially where “secret creek” was. I think he’s at secret creek watching us snd smiling that big bear grin.
Love you and miss you buddy !!

I was working at his new truck wash; I was massively pregnant, & overdue. I went into labor, on his birthday. He called his sister, a nurse, asked her to check on me. After her shift, she popped in. I was scheduled to be induced, the next morning. She noted nobody had checked me, down under, & asked if I’d mind. Lo & behold, I was ready to have the baby! She sprang into action; stayed to help me deliver. Without Doug calling his sister & her following thru, I would have been alone.
RIP Doug

Our family was so saddened to hear of your great loss.
Doug spent a lot of time with our family. We have seen Doug throughout the years. He and Tom always had great conversations. Doug always called me Mrs. Barker, flashed that million dollar smile and laughed. He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with the Wahl and Vellner families at this very difficult time>

Pam and Mike Marchesi:

We knew Doug a long time and are saddened by this loss of a man gone too soon. We remember when he bought Dad's walk-in cooler: drove in with a picker and just picked it off the ground and drove it away! Mom was just talking about trading him apple pie for halibut. Such a kind soul. This world will miss you Doug. Prayers ND sympathy to the family.

Darwin Smith:

Our hearts go out to both family and friends. So sorry for your loss.

Deanna Barker Shea :

Doug, Joan, Christine, Karen, Cathy and families. I’m devastated at this sad news. I adored all of you, and the time spent with you during the years Doug and I were together, was never forgotten. I’m so so sorry for your loss. Your obituary describes him to a T. He had an incredible spirit, huge heart and the best smile ever! I’m not surprised he was an awesome Uncle!
I feel very lucky to have spent 5 years with him and I will always cherish those memories. I’m beyond saddened today and I’m holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

"Indispensable Man"

by Saxon White Kessinger

Sometime when you’re feeling important;
Sometime when your ego’s in bloom
Sometime when you take it for granted
You’re the best qualified in the room,

Sometime when you feel that your going
Would leave an unfillable hole,
Just follow these simple instructions
And see how they humble your soul;

Take a bucket and fill it with water,
Put your hand in it up to the wrist,
Pull it out and the hole that’s remaining
Is a measure of how you’ll be missed.

You can splash all you wish when you enter,
You may stir up the water galore,
But stop and you’ll find that in no time
It looks quite the same as before.

The moral of this quaint example
Is do just the best that you can,
Be proud of yourself but remember,
There’s no indispensable man.

Murray Ross & Marti Nygaard :

We will always remember his contagious smile & unique laugh.
Sending our deepest condolences to the family, during this difficult time.

Laura Skoreyko:
