Arthur Halvorson
1924-2024
Its with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Arthur Halvorson just 2 weeks after his 100th birthday. Art passed quietly at home surrounded by his family at the Eckville Manor, August 16, 2024. Art was born at Mrs. Simpsons Nursing home at the then town of Red Deer, Alberta August 1, 1924, to Andrew and Lydia Halvorson of Sylvan Lake. He grew up attending the Burnt Lake School and playing his all-time favorite sport of Hockey with the Burnt Lake and Sylvan Lake hockey teams.
He travelled and worked around the Alberta and BC provinces for most of his young life working on farms, logging, and doing carpentry work until he finally found his final career running his beloved grader for the County of Red Deer, a job he obtained with the help of his new wife Grace Fenwick, whom he married in 1955.
Art and Grace raised their family of seven children in the Sylvan Lake / Eckville area where Art continued to play hockey, curl, and enjoy dancing and camping with his family every weekend he could. They also opened their home to many foster children through the years and even ended adopting the last 2 children they brought to their home. After 30 years with the county, Art enjoyed a wonderful long retirement continuing to camp, fish and be very active playing horseshoes and dancing. After Grace was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, they moved to town, and he continued to love and care for his wife at home for many years. Art spent the last few years living at the Eckville manor where he continued to live an active lifestyle playing pool, floor curling and participating in every activity available. His luck and skill at games will be long remembered and admired by his friends and family.
Art will be forever missed by his sons Doug (Helen), Vernon (Joanne), Andrew (Lynda). Daughters Shirley (Minolis), Shelley (Sterling), Teri-lynn (Rod), and Jaime, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife of 58 years Grace, daughter Audrey, grandsons Andrew, William and Dustin, great granddaughter Natalia, sisters Alice and Florence, brothers Gordon, Howard, and Clifford.
Family would like to extend their deepest thanks to Kelly and the staff at the Eckville Manor, Terry his private caregiver and Eckville Home Care and Palliative Care team for making Art feel so loved and cared for.
A Celebration of life well be held at the Eckville Community Center on September 14, 2024, at 1:00. A private internment will be held later for immediate family. A luncheon will be served after the service lovingly donated by Art’s great friend Syd from the Boxcar Restaurant.
In lieu of other tributes, Art would have loved for donations to be made to the Eckville Friendship Center where he spent so many enjoyable hours in the last years.
Shirley Hjelmeland and Deb Schultz(daughter):
On behalf of mom and my family sending our condolences Art’s family on his passing. One of Art’s daughters had stopped by a few weeks ago to say hi to mom at the Bethany SL, and hoped to see us at the memorial.
I was at that time considering to bring mom to Art’s memorial but the last week mom’s decline in her health, I won’t be bringing out today which she was looking forward to visiting with all the Halvorson families she knows. Your families are in our thoughts and prayers today as you remember Art. He was a great person from what I have been told and when I recently meet Art at Daisy’s funeral.

So sorry to hear of your Dad's passing! When I was younger your Dad was a Grader Operator for the County of Red Deer and we would be snowed in sometimes for a week so looked forward to him coming down the road and stopping in for a coffee. He was a very nice man and will surely be missed! Rest in Peace Art!
