With a heavy heart we announce the passing of Lawrence William Paton, devoted son,
brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who passed away October 13,
2024, after a long battle with dementia.
Lawrence (Larry) was born April 23, 1941 in Ponteix, Saskatchewan and later moved to
Redcliff, Alberta where he met and fell in love with Marlene Wolodchenko. They were
married on January 27, 1961, and resided in Redcliff where they both worked at Dominion
Glass Company, close to family and friends. On August 17, 1961, Lawrence and Marlene
were blessed with a son, Tyron Lawrence Paton. A few years passed and the couple
transferred to Vancouver, BC with Dominion Glass. There they purchased a home in North
Delta.
In 1972 Lawrence and Marlene moved to the new coal community of Elkford, BC, again back
close with family, where they soon purchased a house. This house soon became the loving
home for Larry, Marlene, and Ty. Larry worked at Fording River Operations, where he was a
heavy duty mechanic alongside Burt Sword and other family working on drill crew, and
shovels.
Lawrence enjoyed 47 years in Elkford with his family, friends and his dogs. He was crafty
with his carpentry, he appreciated fishing, camping, gold panning, and spent quality time with
his son Ty scuba diving. Larry admired nature, especially his squirrels that fancied their yard. Lawrence liked to travel but fell in love with Hawaii, it was his and Marlene’s favourite place.
When Larry required more assistance Ty and Barb had him come live with them as they now
resided in Sylvan Lake, AB. For just over a year Lawrence got to spend some extra special
time with family where he enjoyed Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas and regular outings with
grandchildren. Lawrence spent his last years in Red Deer, AB at Bethany Collegeside Long
Term Care Facility. The staff there treated Larry like family and ensured he was well cared
for right till the end. It was nice to have Larry close to his son and family so we could visit
frequently. We appreciate everything Bethany staff did for us. Thank you.
Larry will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Lawrence is survived by his loving son Tyron, daughter in-law Barbara, grandchildren Tawni
(Eddy), Justin (Laura), Keely (CJ), Kadin, and great grandchildren Quinn, Eleonore, Issac,
Adaiya, Joseph, Ember, soon to be baby girl Paton, and (Dylan/Riley). He is also survived by
sister Gail (Norman) Finlay, sister Sandy (Dale) Blohm, brother Wendel Paton, brother
Harley (Janice) Paton, sister Maureen (Phil) Henri, brother Colin (Debbie) Paton. Best friend
Burt Sword, in-laws Shirley (Chuck) Black, Ron (Ingrid) Wolodchenko, and many nieces and
nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife Marlene, father William, mother Viola,
sister Myrna, in-laws Steve (Helen) Wolodchenko, niece Candice Wolodchenko, nephew
Ryan Henri, good friends, and all his beloved dogs.
A small service will be held at the columbarium in Elkford’s Cemetery at 11am, Friday,
October 25, 2024, where blessings will be said, Lawrence and Marlene will be laid to rest. To
follow will be a celebration of life luncheon at Elkford’s Teck Hall from 12 - 4pm. All are
