Obituary

Backs, Alta Kathleen

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alta Kathleen Backs on September 2, 2020 at the Hospice in the Good Samaritan Clearwater Centre in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta at the age of 82 years. Alta was surrounded by her beloved family and passed peacefully from their loving arms into the Arms of her Lord.

Alta was born on November 3, 1937 to James and Kathleen Williamson in Crossfield, Alberta. She was the fifth of six children. Her home was filled with happiness, faith, hard work and music. She lost her mother when she was 7 years old, a loss she felt keenly her whole life. Her older siblings stepped in and filled her young life with much love. She was grateful for each one of them and all they sacrificed for her and her younger brother. She was educated at the Dogpound and Westbrook Schools and left home at the tender age of 15 to work as a telephone operator in Calgary. She married the love of her life, James (Jim) Backs on July 16, 1956. They were blessed with 5 children and built a loving, faith filled home together. They moved a few times early in their marriage, finally settling on the farm near Alhambra where they resided for almost 50 years. As Alta’s health declined, they moved to a condo in Rocky two years ago.

Alta dedicated her life to raising her children, then working for West Country Family Service Association helping seniors and the disabled remain in their homes as long as possible. She shared her deep faith in the way she lived her life and through teaching Sunday School and singing in the music ministry at Church. Alta was as an active volunteer in the community, the church and retreat groups. She was an avid golfer, curler and gardener and she loved going on bus trips with Jim in their senior years, enjoying the people on the trips as much as the destinations they went to. She was a compassionate soul who was always ready to help someone in need whether by giving a helping hand, a listening ear, a warm hug, or a heartfelt prayer. She was a loving wife, dedicated mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was an enthusiastic cheerleader and the biggest fan of her children and later her grandchildren and great grandchildren at their sporting events, recitals, and concerts. Her life left an impact on all who knew her, and she will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.

Alta leaves to mourn her loss her loving husband of 64 years, Jim; their daughters: Kathy (Bill) Ramage of Rocky Mountain House and Carol (Ed) Szymanek of Eckville, their son Keith (Rhonda) Backs of Evergreen; daughters: Patty (Doug) Galloway of Rocky Mountain House and Barb (Doug ) Dermott of Langdon; 14 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren; sisters: Anita Wood and Corrine Leask; brother Denny (Audrey) Williamson; sisters-in-law: Brandy Williamson and June Williamson; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Alta was predeceased by her parents: James and Kathleen Williamson; stepmother Gladys Williamson; brothers: Nelson, Bob, and an infant brother Denbow; brothers-in-law: Slim Leask and Gordon Wood; sister-in-law Faye Williamson and all of her in-laws on Jim’s side of the family.

A private family Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Jesuit Martyrs Catholic Church (Evergreen) on Saturday, September 12, 2020.

Memorial donations in Alta’s name may be made to the Compassionate Care Hospice Society or West Country Family Service Association, both of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta.
