Laura Kathleen Olsen (Wecker) passed away peacefully at home with family and her dogs close by on Friday, September 22, 2023.
Laura was born in 1939, in Red Deer, and grew up on the family farm in the Happy Hill area. She was active in the local 4-H club and was proud of her accomplishments in sewing and gardening. After graduation, Laura got her teaching certificate and started her teaching career in Bowden along with 5 other brand new teachers, who became some of her lifelong friends.
In 1963, she married John Olsen of the Markerville area. They had their first son, John, in 1964, and moved out to John’s family farm. In 1967, they added to their family with their daughter, Elizabeth. Laura kept busy helping out on the farm and raising her family but was quite happy to resume her teaching career at Spruce View School after her kids were school age. She taught there until her retirement.
Throughout her life, Laura was active in the community and volunteered countless hours for many
different organizations. She enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her family, hosting large gatherings and entertaining. The farm became the place where the Olson and Wecker families got together for both the happy and sad times.
Her children and grandsons were her pride and joy. She felt so fortunate to have them close by right until the end.
Laura is predeceased by her husband, John, her parents, Dave and Freda Wecker, her brother, Brian
Wecker and an infant son, Walter. She is survived by her son, John (Andy), her daughter, Elizabeth
(Betty Brassard), three grandsons, Matthieu Brassard, Michel Brassard, Nathaniel Brassard, her sister, Bonnie Olson (Peter) as well as many in her extended family.
A Celebration of Laura’s Life will be held at Benalto Community Hall, Friday, September 29th at 2:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Lung Association.
