Bentley Cemetery, Bentley Alberta
Sawyer, Shirley Agnes
It is with great sadness Shirley Agnes Sawyer passed away peacefully on January 16, 2023 at the age of 85 years with her family by her side.
Shirley was born in the same farmhouse at Delburne, Alberta that she grew up in. She took her schooling at Great Bend, then Delburne and attended grade 12 at Lindsay Thurber, Red Deer. She had a wonderful upbringing with lots of stories of horseshoe tournaments, fishing, card parties, ball games, skating parties and family dances.
In 1956, she married Ken Benson. They followed the oil patch in the early years before buying a farm and settling in the Westerose, AB area., where they raised their three children. After they sold the farm in 1975, they moved to Sylvan Lake and bought a trailer park.
In 1985, she married Gary Sawyer and they shared twenty five wonderful years of farming and adventures in the Bentley area. They always planted a big garden and fit in a golf game when ever they could. Shirley moved into a lovely house in Bentley after Gary’s passing. In the last couple of years, Eckville Manor became a warm caring home to her as well.
She was the anchor of stability to our family, an incredible cook, hard working farm wife, gardener, and bookkeeper. Shirley enjoyed working at VJV Auction Mart in Ponoka for many years and she was a valued member of the crew at Oaktree Cabinets for over a decade. She cherished her many friends and family. Thank you to all who touched our Mom’s life.
She leaves to mourn her children: daughter Joanne (Glenn) Halladay, son Don (Jeanie Shields), daughter Cindy (Rick) Henning; sister-in-law Dalora Wilton; 5 Grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 1 great great granddaughter little Ivy and numerous nieces and nephews. She was proud of all of them!!!
Shirley was predeceased by her husband Gary Sawyer; her first husband Ken Benson; her parents Nellie and Everett Wilton; sister and brother-in-law Frances and Kaye Kelly; and brother Larry Wilton.
An Interment was held at the Bentley Cemetery for Shirley with her family in attendance.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
