Nov 13, 1932 - Apr 4, 2025

Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Walter Allen Gathercole on April 4, 2025, at the Red Deer Hospice.

Walter was born in Condor, Alberta on November 13, 1932. In 1955, Walter married the love of his life Bette-Lou Halstein whom he spent his life with. Together they had two children, Susan and Rod.

Walter took three years of mechanics and enjoyed this for a while. Later, he began custodial work for H.J Cody Highschool. He retired from H.J Cody after 30 years of hard work.

On February 11, 2025, Walter was admitted into the Red Deer Hospital and spent five and a half weeks there. Then, on April 4th, he took his last breath at the Red Deer Hospice surrounded by the love of his family.

Walter will be lovingly remembered by his wife Bette Lou; his children Susan (Rick) Reynolds of Langley, British Columbia and Rod (Arlene) Gathercole of Sylvan Lake, Alberta; three grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

Walter will be buried in a family plot in Kuusamo Cemetery at a later date.

Wendy Morris:

Dear Bette, Susan and Rod and all your families. I am so sorry to hear of Walt’s passing. I have great memories of camping, fishing, cards and lots of laughter and stories with Walt and Bette and my parents. Always stopped to visit and always left with a chuckle after a visit. I’m so sorry.

Brenda (Lund) Scott:

Dear Bette, Susan, Rod, and family- sending you all love and prayers. As a child I knew Walter as Wally; at school Mr. Gathercole. Bette and Wally were adopted members of our Lund family, and I always looked forward to seeing them at our family gatherings. Walter was a consistently cheerful, friendly, kind, hardworking man with an easy laugh. I will always remember him with a smile.
