Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Berny Lahti on January 30, 2025. Bernard (Berny) Maxwell Lahti was born in Eckville, Alberta on September 17, 1944 to Larry and Nim Lahti.

The family lived in Hespero for a few years and later purchased land at the corner of 766 and Highway 11. There they established Larry’s Service. Berny’s love of automobiles started at a very young age. A story is told of how he stood on a coke box in order to reach the windshield of a vehicle he was gassing up. Berny attended school in Eckville and Red Deer. After graduation, he received his Automotive Service Technology diploma (with honours) from SAIT. One of Berny’s proudest moments was when his professor at SAIT asked him to work on his own personal vehicle. This showed his attention to detail and mastery of the trade. After apprenticing at Kasha Farm Supplies, Berny obtained his mechanics license. Shortly after, Berny started a career in the oilfield industry. In February 1967, Berny married Rosemary Martin and they spent the next 58 years building a life together. They have three daughters, Angela, Jody and Darla. After 30 years in the oilfield, working for Hudson’s Bay, Tenneco, Dome, Amoco, Encor and NAL Resources, Berny retired. In 1993, a shop at home was built and Berny started BML Services where he continued to provide expert mechanical service. Over the years, many people have sought out his help or advice on various projects. He has passed his knowledge onto his children and grandchildren as well as many others. Those fortunate to break down near Berny’s were often quite surprised that he had the part they needed! Berny enjoyed being outdoors. In early years, camping, hunting and quadding were some of his favorite pastimes. He was always up for an adventure or a wild swamp buggy ride! Many memories were made on those trips with family and friends. Later, farming, meals and visits with friends and scenic drives out west were what he enjoyed. Berny was a handyman and could fix anything and everything. He was a mentor to many and enjoyed sharing his experiences and knowledge. He was quick to befriend anyone and his generous, giving nature was apparent in everything he did. Berny’s sense of humor and witty comments made every conversation memorable. He was an exceptional mechanic, an exceptional friend, and an exceptional dad.

Berny is survived by his wife, Rosemary, of 58 years, his daughters, Angela (Fred), Jody (Gary) and Darla (Jeremy). Grandchildren, Danielle (Eric), Tyler, Dustin, Spencer (Megan), Kolton, Keely (Kale) and Kammy.

The Lahti family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Chase, Kim and all of the first responders who assisted in our time of need.

Funeral Service will be held 1:00pm Monday, February 10, 2025 at the Eckville Community Center.
