Eckville Legion - Eckville, Alberta

Please join us in a 90th Birthday/Celebration of Life on June 5, 2024, at the Eckville Legion from 2-4 pm.

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mom, Grama, GG, Ida Marie Hughes of Eckville, Alberta. Mom passed away on May 4, 2024, at the RDRH at the age of 89 with her family by her side.

She will be deeply missed by her children Debbie, Donald (Susie) Cindy, Randy, Jack and Joey (Caroline), her brother Danny (Marlene), Sister Dorothy (Ken), her many grandchildren, great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and friends. All who she loved deeply. Mom grew up in Unity Saskatchewan and was the 13th child of 14. She was predeceased by her husband Danny, son-in-law Walter (Sonny) Fancy, parents Walburga & Frederick Schraeder, brothers George, Alphonse, Lorne, Fred, Johnny, Joe & Peter. Sisters – Liz, Cecilia, Theresa, & Frances. Mom moved to Calgary and met dad and married in 1955 where they started their family. They had Deb & Donald and then moved to Montreal where they lived for 9 years. Then came Cindy, Randy, Jack & Joey. They moved to Eckville in 1969 where she spent the next 45 years raising her family and being a loved member of the community. Mom worked at the Eckville Manor, COOP hardware, and finished her career with Canada Post where she retired. After retirement mom spent many hours helping at the Thrift Store. Mom loved her family and everyone who entered her life. There was always a no judgement zone in her presence, and she was always there to listen or help whenever she could. She adopted so many more members to her family over the years and was truly loved by all who knew her. She loved to garden, anyone who knew her probably has a ceramic piece she made over the years, or a birdhouse she painted, and we all know how much she loved her Bingo.

What we have once loved deeply, we can never lose <3

Please join us in a 90th Birthday/Celebration of Life on June 5, 2024, at the Eckville Legion from 2-4 pm.

Working at the Coop all those years afforded me the honour of meeting literally many hundreds of people. But some touched my heart in a special way. Ida was one of those special ladies. The store just got a little brighter when she walked in. She had that special light around her. To the family know she is not gone as she lives in each one of you. Gone but never forgot.

Ramona Joye:

I loved Ida. I’ve known her since I was 18. Lived with her six months when I moved to Alberta and we were close. She always called me her adopted daughter. She is my son Daltons loving grandmother and he loved all the time he could spend with her. She looked after everyone and people that needed her help. Strangers were welcome and all her kids nephews friends brought people over and she would feed an army. Everyone was always welcome. She had the kindest soul and when she laughed she lit up the room. I took both Danny & Ida on many road trips. Her photo used was when I took her to Golden BC to have supper with a dear friend. She will always be my second mother and I will forever love her and enjoy all the Imemories I had with her. Rest now Ida. Of all people you deserve to rest easy. Love You Forever Ramona

Susan and Randy Norberg:

We were so sorry to hear of the passing of Ida. She was a good friend/neighbor of mom’s (and ceramics buddy) for many years and then they ended up being in rooms next to each other at the Manor. We always enjoyed our visits with Ida when we visited mom at the Manor. Sending our sincere sympathies to the family.
