Thora Moir Obituary

Thora Vivian Moir (nee Thorsteinson) passed away peacefully in Bethany Sylvan Lake on December 2, 2024. Thora was born along with her twin sister Thelma on the farm in Wynyard, Saskatchewan in 1928. Growing up on the farm in the 1930’s she learned to appreciate what it took to get by, and developed a life-long love of berry picking and fishing. After high school she took nursing and graduated with her R.N. degree from Yorkton Hospital. She later worked at hospitals in Wynyard and Humbolt and also “specialled” several patients who were terminally ill. Thora married Stanley Moir in 1950, and their only son Peter was born in Wynyard in 1951. During that time Thora worked as a nurse and Stanley as a station agent for CPR. They moved to Olds Alberta in 1957 where Stan was employed as a carpenter. They later moved to Calgary after Stan became a government meat inspector. Thora was very active in her community in Calgary. Curling was her passion, but she was also strongly involved in playing bridge, weaving and bingo. She participated in numerous curling bonspiels and provincial playdowns. She also loved to watch curling on television and she critiqued every call and shot that was made. Thora remained close to her nursing classmates and looked forward to the reunions they had regularly.

Thora moved to Sylvan Lake to be closer to family in 2016. She always found it easy to make friends, so she had close friends no matter where she was living. She will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.

She was predeceased by her husband Stanley in 1990, her parents, Elizabeth (nee Readman) and Petur Thorsteinson and her siblings Stan, Raymond, Lillian and Thelma. Thora is survived by her son Peter and his wife Dolce and her two granddaughters Elissa (Jordan) and Jocelyn (Stuart) as well as great grandchildren Declan, Lillian, Jonas, Noah, Greyson and Landon.

The family would like to thank the staff at Bethany Sylvan Lake for their excellent care of Thora in her time there.

A Celebration of Life for Thora will be announced at a later date.

Donations in memory of Thora can be made to Bethany Sylvan Lake, 4700 47 Ave, Sylvan Lake, Alberta, T4S 2M3.

Condolences

Bob & Susan Samson:

We were sorry to hear of your Moms passing Pete. Our condolence’s to You, Dolce and the girls.

Barbara Thorlacius Denny:

To me, she was my Aunt Dodie. I do not know where that nickname came from but it stuck!
She always found humor in any situation . As I remember that and her chuckle, I also remember an aunt to which family was everything. The last of her siblings to cross over, I can only imagine the reunion!
Sending my condolences to Peter, family and friends.
