Obituary

Violet Turner
1932-2018
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Violet (Vi) Elizabeth Turner on December 6, 2018 at the Red Deer Hospice.
Violet was born on the homestead at Hespero AB on August 1, 1932 to Walter and Toini Maki. When Violet was two years old her Mother passed away and she was raised by her loving Father, caring Aunt and Uncle and extended family. Violet’s father firmly believed that education was important so she attended grades 1 to 8 at Daisy Nook School, grade 9 at Benalto, grade 10 at the Red Deer Comp and then moved with her father to Salmon Arm where she finished her high school education. She was also very proud of her Finn heritage and spoke, wrote and read the Finn language fluently. After high school Violet was employed at the SAFE Department Store in Salmon Arm in the grocery department. While going to school in Salmon Arm she met her high school sweetheart Alastair Turner, they married in 1952 and moved to the BC Caribou working on Boltbee’s Bridge Lake Herford ranch. In 1954 Violet’s dear father passed away and Violet and Alastair purchased the Hespero homestead where they still reside. In 2016 Violet and Alastair were awarded the Clearwater County Century Farm Award for having the homestead in the family for over 100 years.
Violet was a very loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, she was proud of her family and all their accomplishments. All the family fondly remember the wonderful meals and fresh baking that she would have whenever they visited. No one could leave her house hungry, and care packages were always sent for the trip home. Violet always grew a big garden and fresh vegetables were always a welcome gift to family and friends.
Violet is survived by her loving family, her husband of sixty six years, Alastair, two daughters Marion (Marcel) Robin and Jeanette, two sons Lorne (Barb) and Rodney (Donna), nine grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and dear friend Ali Graham. Violet is also survived by numerous relatives in Canada and Finland. She was predeceased by her Mother, Father, two infant brothers, six half-sisters, three half-brothers, a step-mother and a step-brother.
At Violet’s request there will be no service. She will be laid to rest at a later date in the Hespero cemetery beside her Mother and brothers. For those wishing to make a memorial donation in Vi’s name, donations may be made to the Red Deer Hospice 99 Arnot Ave, Red Deer, AB T4R 3S6.
